Medina Elementary Math Club

Medina Math Club is for students who are interested in Math Competitions which cover advanced math topics in 4th and 5th grade levels. The focus will be on preparing kids for math competitions around the State, and developing advanced problem solving skills. The topics will include geometry, algebra, probability, rates/ratios/proportions, counting problems, logics, and number theory. Any family needs to join PTA before the student can sign up this Medina PTA sponsored club. If you have not joined yet, click HERE to do so now.

This program will be run by Medina parents and will support up to 20 students/per class due to space availability.  It is open to all Medina 3rd, 4th and 5th graders ONLY.

Registration for Math Club is now closed.

What happens after registration? On September 19th, all registered students and parents will meet in the gym after school. This session is free but mandatory. Parents will be introduced to the reorganized math club on how the club will be run, and the students will be assessed for their levels. Students are required to attend the assessment to be allocated into proper levels, and parents are required to meet the posted volunteering requirement. Only students meeting all announced prerequisites will be accepted and needed to pay the club fee.

Club Fee: $120 per student for the whole year. This will cover purchasing math materials for the Club, and pay for most competitions for all Club members. Payment must be received by September 30th, 2017, and no refund after the October 5th, 2017.

LEVELS. All competitions tend to be above current grade level, and require good understanding of basic math concepts, intensive math skills and experiences.

TEAMS. Each student will be responsible to form/join your own team. Each team consists of 4 students. In an effort to keep the Medina teams competitive, the Club requires team to be formed within your own level assignments when possible. Teams should be formed within their class first, before others are considered. Exceptions are allowed due to age/grade difference, or unexpected circumstances which should be discussed with the Club.

TRANSPORTATION. For all off-site competitions, parents are responsible to transport their kids to the competition site on time and back.

BEHAVIOR. All participants are expected to be respectful and cooperative. The coaches can exclude a student from the club meetings (after sufficient warnings) if they feel the student's behavior is disturbing other students.

MEET & DISMISSAL. Students should report to the gym immediately after school on practice days. All students are to be picked up from the outside covered area after each practice at 4:00 pm. Two late picking ups (or one extended late picking up) will result in exclusion of the student, and the position will be replaced by another student on the waiting list.

Periodic Assessment. In addition to the initial assessment, periodic assessments will also be given. Students who do not pass a periodic assessment (passing score is 60% or higher) will be given a chance to improve, 2 consecutive fail marks result in the student be replaced by a new student from the waiting list. No refund on disqualification due to failed assessments.

Attendance. The Club meets once a week on Tuesdays after school. Students must attend. Two unexcused absences will result in the student be replace by another student from the waitlist. Please be sure to plan your schedule before committing to the Club. Notify the Club of your student’s absence by no later than end of day Monday in order to be excused. No refund on disqualification due to unexcused absences.

Volunteer Requirement. Volunteering will be required. There are a few different types of volunteers. Each family must do one or more of the following:

    • Coaches: Teaching classes in Classroom for at least 5 times during the year.
    • Head Coaches: Each classroom needs a head coach to coordinate all coaches of that classroom.
    • Classroom volunteers: Each family must volunteer at least 2 times in classroom throughout the year to help with attendance and organizing the classrooms, so coaches can just focus on teaching math.

COMPETITIONS. The club plans to register for the following competitions, deadlines for competition registrations are listed, please make sure you register your students by each of the deadlines listed. Competitions are open to ALL Medina students but if you are not registered with Math Club, a competition fee will be collected at registration to cover the cost.  If you are already signed up with Math Club, you do not need to pay the competition fee. Participation in these competitions is a requirement for those students in the Club.
