Chair: Jinah Lim

Read-A-Thon is a year-long program offering a series of two-month-long reading challenges. For each challenge, students choose at least three books to read from a list of well-regarded, age appropriate books. The program is designed to help students cultivate a love of reading, develop good reading habits, and gain exposure to books from a wide variety of genres.

What is Read-A-Thon, and who can participate?

Read-A-Thon is a reading program for all Medina Elementary students (K-5th grade). The program introduces students to high quality books and encourages students to read consistently throughout the school year.

Unlike most "-A-Thons," Medina Elementary Read-A-Thon is NOT a fundraising event.

Why should I participate in Read-A-Thon?

Reading helps students sharpen their minds, increase vocabulary, improve memory and focus, strengthen their writing abilities, enhance imagination, and so much more.

How is Read-A-Thon structured?

While Read-A-Thon runs the entire school year, the program will be divided into four separate reading challenges, as follows:

      • First Reading Challenge: October 11th to November 27th
      • Second Reading Challenge: December 1st to January 31st [current challenge]
      • Third Reading Challenge: February / March
      • Fourth Reading Challenge: April / May

We will keep track of the number of books that each student reads during a challenge's time frame. Once a new challenge begins, everyone starts afresh! This means students can join Read-A-Thon mid-year without feeling like they're behind.

How do I participate in Read-A-Thon?

STEP ONE: REGISTER

Parents need to register their child here. Registration will remain open for the entire school year, and we encourage you to sign up at any time. Your child will receive a personalized Read-A-Thon bookmark just for signing up!

STEP TWO: READ

For every challenge, we will release a new list of books (a.k.a the "Book List"). To complete the challenge, participating students should read at least three appropriate books from the Book List. Alternatively, if they want to win the challenge, they can read as many of the books as possible! Keep in mind that only books from the Book List count towards your Read-A-Thon totals.

Students can read by themselves or parents can read with them.

STEP THREE: SUBMIT BOOK REPORTS

Once a student finishes reading a book, he or she should submit a simple book report. We will only know that you've read a book if you submit a book report! Book reports for the current challenge are due January 31st!

How do I submit my book reports?

Book reports for Read-A-Thon must be submitted online here via a Google form. The online system makes it possible for Read-A-Thon's parent volunteers to keep track of every student's progress. However, we understand that not all students are capable of typing their own answers into the form. Especially for our younger readers, parents are permitted to type their child's responses word for word into the online book report form.

If you have any questions about the online form, please send your question to readathon@medinapta.org.

What books can I read for Read-A-Thon?

Once every two months, we will distribute a new Book List. The Book List will be posted at the top of this page, in the Byte newsletter, and on the bulletin board in the main hall of the school.

Please note that the Book List provides a recommended age range for each book. While the age range is a great guideline, we recognize that each child is different. As such, we ask that parents help their children choose the books that are most appropriate for them. If your child finishes all appropriate books in the Book List, please feel free to email us at readathon@medinapta.org to request an expanded Book List.

What kinds of books will be included in the monthly Book Lists?

Read-A-Thon Book Lists will include books from a variety of genres and cultures, as well as special holiday books (ex. Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter). All of the books will be recommended by a reputable source, such as the Bellevue Library, and approved by our school librarian.

To ensure that every child has access to the books in this challenge, all books from the current Book List are available from the school library. In general, all books chosen for Read-A-Thon will be available either from the school library or the Bellevue Public Library.

Is there a prize for winning Read-A-Thon?

Yes! Your child will receive a special personalized Read-A-Thon bookmark just for signing up!

For each completed challenge, your child will receive a tassel to add to their bookmark. They can embellish their bookmarks with up to four tassels if they complete all four challenges.

Finally, there is a grade-wide prize for children who want to try to read the most books. The student in each grade who reads the most books in a challenge will get to choose a book that gets donated to their classroom library. The winner can present the book to their teacher and be the first in their class to read it.

What if I've already read a book in the monthly book list?

Read the book again! There is always something new to discover from each rereading of a book! Remember that you can only submit book reports for books you have read during that challenge (NOT before!).

What if I have book suggestions for future Read-A-Thon challenges?

We welcome your suggestions! Parents often discover wonderful books for their own children, and can pass on their knowledge to others in the community. We particularly want to hear from you if you're aware of great books from your culture. Medina Elementary is striving to teach and familiarize students with books, stories, and authors from around the world!

Please send your suggestions to readathon@medinapta.org.
