Presidents' Message

Hello everyone!

We can't believe that we only have 3 weeks of school left. It has flown by so quickly and the calendar is VERY full.

First and foremost, we want to invite everyone to attend our final PTA meeting of the year. It will be Friday 6/8 at 6 pm in the Art Room. We will have a supervised movie night going on at the same time in the gym for our kiddos! Please plan on attending if you can as we will be electing our new officers, voting on our budget and going over all we want to cover next year well as giving out our Golden Acorn PTA awards.

On Saturday, 6/2, our chess club is hosting GM Hou Yifan for a lecture, Q&A and autographs. She will also play 20 students in a Simul game. What an amazing opportunity for our community. Thank you to Gulin Goktepe for working with the Washington Chess Federation to make this happen.

We then continue the week with our ABC countdown! Monday is "L" which is Luau Day so have your kids plan on dressing Hawaiian!

Tuesday and Wednesday hosts our K-4 music concerts. This is always a fun and entertaining evening. Please see below for days and times for your student's grade.

And last but definitely not least, plan on attending our Family Dance Night on Saturday 6/9. The theme is Superheroes and we can't wait to see all the kids dressed up. And some brave adults too!!  We will have food and pictures and fun for everyone!! More info is below.

Thank you and enjoy the weekend!

Principal's Message

Lockdown Drill:

We had a very successful school drill today – it was our first time this year to conduct a Lock Down Drill with an Internal Intruder and Possible Evacuation.   Students were well prepared due to classroom and home discussions around the importance of practicing all forms of drills, so that in the event of a possible real situation, our students and staff are as well prepared as possible.  Thank you for your part in discussing this with your students and aiding their preparation.  It takes the full community so often, on behalf of our shared students.

The following information is for current 5th grade students who are moving on to one of our BSD middle schools:

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that we are in the final stretch of fifth grade!  As you take a moment (and maybe a few deep breaths) to think about your child and the upcoming transition to middle school, I want to make you aware of an important, required SUMMER READING EXPERIENCE.  Research shows that students who continue to read over the summer months are better prepared to engage in learning at the beginning of the school year and will avoid “summer slide” where some students demonstrate a decline in reading achievement which can impact readiness for continued learning in the fall. In Bellevue School District, beginning in fifth grade and continuing through high school, students are expected to participate in a summer reading experience.

Here is what you need to know:

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander is the newly adopted summer reading book that is assigned to all incoming sixth graders across the district. The poetic novel is a heartwarming story about family, love, and loss.  The main character is an African American boy in middle school. The story is written from his point of view and includes his feelings about the loss of his father.  As one student communicated while providing feedback about the novel, “I thought it was sad and inspiring and funny – all at the same time!”  A few other common themes of feedback from students in our district that helped in the selection of The Crossover:

“This is the best book I have ever read!"

“Incoming 6th graders will face challenges in Middle School that The Crossover explains"

“Heartwarming story”

“I enjoyed the expressive poetic diction”

Students will be provided the novel and accompanying materials before the end of the school year.  It might be beneficial to help your child create a summer reading schedule and check in on progress throughout the summer.  The accompanying materials should be filled out to capture your child’s thinking along the way.  The summer reading experience will be used as a launching point for sixth grade language arts in their first unit of study.  It is important that students read the book as we want everyone to feel included in the classroom discussions about the novel and the story is very engaging!

If you have any questions now or over the summer about The Crossover or the summer reading experience, please do not hesitate to reach out to Liz Ritz, Director of Curriculum and Instruction (ritze@bsd405.org).

Have a beautiful weekend.

We are an award winning PTA!

Thank you to all our volunteers who work so hard to make us the award winning PTA that we are. This year at the WA State PTA Convention, we were awarded the Bronze level Standards of Excellence. This award honors the programs and events, communication and advocacy that we work towards for our families and community.

We also received the 100% staff membership award. Thank you to our generous parents who donate these to allow our staff to be fully involved voting members!

Additionally, we received the 100% PTA membership award. This means that we had at least one adult membership for each student that attends Medina Elementary. Only 5 schools in the state including Elementary, Middle and High schools achieved this goal. And again, we couldn't have done it without you. This says that you support our mission to enrich the lives of our children and that you take it seriously.

We were also awarded the Silver level Outstanding Website award. We appreciate the hard work of Lucille Tam and Shamima Paurobally for keeping us informed throughout the year via this central location.

Chinook Walkabout Program

Hello incoming Chinook 6th grade parents!

My name is Annie Roth.  I am a current (for a few more weeks) Chinook parent and I am writing to inform you of a couple of volunteer opportunities at Chinook.

For those who are sending your first child to Chinook this fall, I want to let you know about Chinook’s Walkabout Program.  I started the latest version of this program four years ago when the new building first opened.  Through the Walkabout Program teams of parents and other interested community members come to Chinook during the lunches to hang out and be a friendly, positive adult presence at school.  The goal is to make a positive impact on the school culture at Chinook.  As an added benefit, volunteers also get to see firsthand the dynamics of middle school life.

For those of you who will be looking for ways to be involved at Chinook in the fall, please consider becoming a Walkabout Volunteer.  The time commitment does not have to be large.  Volunteering for just one lunch a week or every other week is a great way to go.  A weekly or biweekly time slot allows for consistency with the students without being overly taxing on busy schedules.  For those who can do more, great!  And for those who can volunteer only once a month, no problem!

If you have questions about the Walkabout Program or if you already know that you would like to sign up to be a volunteer, please contact me at annie@roth-family.net

On another note, as I mentioned above, I am a current Chinook parent for only a few more weeks; my youngest child is an 8th grader this year and will be heading to BHS in the fall.  As a result, I am looking for a new coordinator.  This role is not highly time consuming.  There is the on-going work of updating the schedule and sending out weekly reminders which isn’t very demanding.  There is a bit more work at the start of the school year getting the program going and recruiting new volunteers, but this is very doable and can be adjusted as needed.  This role can definitely be split.  Co-coordinators could work well and would lighten the load.  I will be around in the fall and would be most happy to help a new coordinator/s get the program started for next year.

I have really enjoyed my family’s time at Chinook and the Walkabout Program has been a big part of that.  I believe that I have felt much more connected to the life of Chinook because of the opportunity to be at school so consistently both as a Walkabout Volunteer and the Walkabout Coordinator.

I am eager to see the program continue after I leave!  I hope there is a parent/s in the Chinook community who will be interested in taking over as the Walkabout Coordinator/s next year.

If anyone is interested in learning more about this role, please let me know!  I would love to chat with you!  Again, I am at annie@roth-family.net.

Thank you!
