Presidents' Message

Hello Medina Community!

First, congratulations to all our students who participated in the Medina's Got Talent! talent show on Friday night. With strong showings in singing, piano, flute, dance, gymnastics, comedy and more, we were treated to a well rounded show by our own children! A special thank you to Alicia Alibhai and Eileen Foley who coordinated this event.

Congratulations also to our students who went to the National Chess tournament. Medina came in 9th place in K-3 with just 3 players on the team!  See below for more placements in all age groups. This last week marked the end of our chess club's season. A HUGE thank you to Gulin Goktepe and Yu Liu for all their hard work this year. Without them and all the parent volunteers throughout the year and at the two tournaments, this would not be possible.

With only 24 school days left in the year, our calendar is filling up!

Have your kids join in the fun of the last days with our ABC countdown! Monday we start with C - Wear a pair of CRAZY socks!

Please mark on your calendars our final General Assembly meeting of the year which will take place on Friday evening 6/8/18 at 6 pm in the Art Room. We will have a movie night for our children in the Multi Purpose room with adult supervision. Please plan on attending if you can as we will be voting on next year's board members, next year's budget and presenting our Golden Acorn awards to some 5th grade parents who have been active volunteers and who will be graduating out with their students.

Remember - there is no school on Memorial Day 5/28/18.  Have a great week!

Principal's Message

Crosswalk Safety:  A quick reminder from our wonderful Bus driver crew for students to use the cross walks when walking or riding their bikes to school.  There have been some reports of our students crossing the street at random spots in front of cars and the school busses.  Please discuss this safety reminder with your students.  We value their well-being.

Suicide Awareness & Resources:

 ·        See resources within the attached letter

 ·        Netflix series ’13 Reasons Why’:  With the recent and tragic shooting in Texas today, sad news within our own district, and the release of the second season of 13 Reasons Why, which will premiere on Netflix tonight,  Friday, May 18th, I feel compelled to share the attached letter and information about this Netflix series.  If you are not familiar with the series, the first season centered on a student’s suicide, chronicling her stated reasons why she had taken her life. The second season follows the aftermath and deals with issues of suicide, sexual assault, guilt, and revenge.  The attached letter includes some brief information on the series and provides resources for parents to use, should they choose, when discussing difficult topics with their students.  I’m sharing this letter with all of you, even though the show is targeted at high school students, because middle school and upper elementary school students may watch the show as well.

Kindness Club Chalk Walk:  What beautiful way to start our day today – with inspiring words from our children.  Our Kindness Club students spent some time yesterday writing heartfelt words, phrases and messages to their peers, the staff and our community at large, to read as we entered school today.  These simple sentiment are a quick and friendly way to remind us of all that we have to be grateful for in a day shared at Medina, through our shared teaching, learning and play.  If you have a moment, take the time to stop, read, and enjoy their work.  See the attached picture of our entry stairs.

Have a beautiful weekend.

The Golden Acorn Award is presented by local PTAs to volunteers in recognition of their exemplary and outstanding service. The Medina Elementary PTA awards this honor to volunteers who are “graduating” from Medina Elementary with their 5th grade students. Recognizing individuals who go above and beyond in supporting our children is a great way to acknowledge how much their service matters. If you would like to nominate a volunteer for his or her dedicated service in support of students, send your nomination to by Friday, 5/18. Please be sure to include a brief summary of why you believe the volunteer should be recognized and any PTA positions they may have held.

 Supporting Kids Through Tough Times

Trauma Informed Care & Restorative Practices

How do we help our kids deal with the stress of modern challenges—from the isolation of social media and the impact of national tragedies, to racism, personal trauma, and more? Join Bellevue Schools Foundation and CJ Ellsworth of Sea Mar Community Health Center for a discussion of what we can do as parents and community members who care about our youth.

Saturday, June 2, from 10-11:30 a.m.
Highland Middle School, 15027 Bel-Red Rd, Bellevue
