Presidents' Message

We would like to thank all the dedicated parents who volunteered this week to help celebrate our school's staff and teachers during Staff Appreciation Week.  Thank you Cindy Gayte and Karyn O'Hara for coordinating these events.

Be sure to attend Medina's Got Talent this week. It will start at 6:30 pm on Friday, May 18th. You will be amazed at the talented performances given by Medina's students.

We will be collecting Box Tops May 14-May 18. Please remember to bring yours in this week.

Nominations for the Golden Acorn award is due by this Friday, May 18th.

This week, we will kick off the ABC's to the End of School. Starting this Thursday, May 17th, there are only 26 days of school left. Each day will be a special theme based on the letter of the day. Thursday, May 17th, is bring a stuffed animal to school day.  See the calendar below for the themes for each day until the last day of school.

There are many exciting activities in the weeks to come, so stay tuned to the Byte!

Principal's Message

Hello Medina Families,

Teacher Appreciation week:  What an amazing week it was at Medina Elementary.  It started with an assembly line of volunteer parents at the entrance of the school who gathered up all of the lovely flowers students brought in for Teacher Appreciation Week.  These were they arranged into vases for every staff member in the building!  It was like a floral shop throughout the building.  The week of appreciation continued beautiful homemade cards, sweet little gifts of gratitude, and Wednesday brought a feast at lunch fit for royalty – We stuffed our faces on incredible Thai dishes that were memorable.  What a great way to honor the month of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage is celebrated.  Thank you all, students and parents who made this such a special week for us all.  We felt your appreciation deeply.  Thank you all.  J

Smarter Balanced Assessment:  Remember 5th grade Parent, your students’ first assessment will be Monday morning. They will take the ELA CAT– English Language Arts Computer Adaptive Test.  It’s not too late to get on line to see what these assessments look like with your student, 3rd – 5th grades.  Here is that link:

OSPI Survey
Our state’s K-12 education agency – the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) – is conducting a survey on future public K-12 education investments as part of their budget development process.
The anonymous survey will remain open through Friday, June 8, and is available in nine languages in addition to English: Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Somali, Traditional Chinese, Khmer, Korean, Punjabi, and Tagalog.

Join in our School Events

The Golden Acorn Award is presented by local PTAs to volunteers in recognition of their exemplary and outstanding service. The Medina Elementary PTA awards this honor to volunteers who are “graduating” from Medina Elementary with their 5th grade students. Recognizing individuals who go above and beyond in supporting our children is a great way to acknowledge how much their service matters. If you would like to nominate a volunteer for his or her dedicated service in support of students, send your nomination to by Friday, 5/18. Please be sure to include a brief summary of why you believe the volunteer should be recognized and any PTA positions they may have held.


BOX TOP COLLECTION WEEK IS  May 14th – May 18th        

-This is a great competition to raise funds for our school just by looking at products you already purchase! Bring in the box tops of those participating products you already use (e.g. Ziploc Bags, Progressive Soup, Motts Apple Juice, Kleenex tissues, several cereal brands, etc)
-Bags will be distributed to the teachers
-Each child should bring their Boxtops to their classroom.  Or they can drop them off in the Boxtops collection box in the office.
-Please trim the Boxtops and place them in a baggie, noting the teachers name.
-The class collecting the most Boxtops in each grade level will win a prize!

The excitement is building.  Please join us in supporting our super star students at our annual show, Medina’s Got Talent, which will be on Friday, May 18th @ 6:30pm.  The  Talent Show will be at Medina Elementary (all acts must arrive by 6pm).  The kids will be performing various acts which they have put together to entertain us. 

The reviews are in and here’s what they’re saying:

Medina PTA member calls the show- “ A must see.  Most likely the best talent show you’ll see all year.”

Medina parent- “It’s filled with emotion.  I laughed, I cried. I smiled a lot. It moved me.”

Another Medina parent- “The energy is so intense you can almost feel it and the kids are so darn cute and talented, it’s ridiculous.”

Just a reminder for those who have kids in the show, we will be having a rehearsal on Thursday, May 17th, from 2:45-5pm – Dress Rehearsals in the Multi-Purpose Room (must have full costume/attire and be accompanied by an adult).

We’re excited for this event and can’t wait to see your TALENT!  Show us what you’ve got Medina Elementary!

 BSD Gifted Program Update – A BGA Event

With Dr. Ivan Duran, BSD Superintendent and Lora McHugh, supervisor of gifted education in Bellevue School District (BSD). Dr. Duran and Lora will be speaking about an update on gifted education in BSD. The presentation will focus on information about gifted services, student achievement, and student matriculation data.

We have had several requests for a time for parents to meet other parents in gifted, and this is our answer to that request. Cookies will be provided.

With only two months of this school year left, we are actively looking to create next year's PTA board. Please let us know if you are interested in taking a position as one of the dedicated individuals who will serve on next year's Executive Committee and Board of Directors.  Supporting Kids Through Tough Times

 Trauma Informed Care & Restorative Practices

How do we help our kids deal with the stress of modern challenges—from the isolation of social media and the impact of national tragedies, to racism, personal trauma, and more? Join Bellevue Schools Foundation and CJ Ellsworth of Sea Mar Community Health Center for a discussion of what we can do as parents and community members who care about our youth.

Parents and community members who attend this event will learn about ways to better support children through our current challenging times, and how to reduce their stress by teaching their caregivers and support systems tools to help them through these issues.

This event is free and open to the public;  please register at this link.

CJ Ellsworth, MA, LMFT, CMHS will lead the information session and discussion; Mrs. Ellsworth is a Program Manager and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist & Supervisor, in Child & Family Behavioral Health program at Sea Mar Community Health Center. This session is funded by King County’s Best Starts for Kids grant.

Music Concert 

 Please mark your calendars for our June Music Concerts!

 K/1 Music Concert: Tuesday June 5th 6:00pm

 2nd Grade Concert: Tuesday June 5th 7:00pm

 3rd Grade Concert: Wednesday June 6th 6:00

 4th Grade “Beatles” Concert: Wednesday June 6th 7:00

 Students and families should arrive 5-10 minutes before their concert time, and go directly to the gym and be seated. Please email me with any questions, or let me know if you would like to volunteer to help with any of the concerts.

Effective immediately we have changed runners club to Wednesday and Friday mornings starting at 7:30am.   
This club is open to all students and a great way for children to say hi to there friends before school starts
