Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Medina Community,

Thank you to those of you who were able to join us last week for our Parent Safety Forum with Doug James, Director of Security, BSD.  It was a productive and informative discussion.

I look forward to the month of April as there are a number of events that will be fun and engaging for our students and families:  World Cultures Night, 4/18 and STEM Night, 4/23.  I look forward to seeing all of you at both of these great events.

On Thursday, March 29th, students and staff attended our Virtues Assembly focused on Kindness.  Our Medina Kindness Club members took the lead in inspiring kindness and compassion in others through promoting recent club endeavors, including the upcoming Drive for the Homeless, as well as a Kindness Rocks project.  In addition, our wonderful GSA (General School Assistants) presented Kindness Awards to two students from each grade level.

Please join us to Spring for Schools!

Bellevue Schools Foundation’s annual fundraising luncheon is coming up on April 27th!  Will you join us in supporting this great nonprofit?  For more information or to register, please contact  Alternatively, you can check it out at  If you register through the BSF website and you’d like to be seated with other Medina parents, please feel free to select Jessica Rossman or Tracy Mayclin under “Table Seating Selection.”  In addition to supporting a great cause, it’s an opportunity to get together and meet more of our wonderful school community!

BSF is an independent nonprofit that supports the educational mission of Bellevue School District. BSF funds specific projects for individual schools, including Medina, and also works district-wide to develop new curricula that meaningfully improve the education our kids receive throughout their time in Bellevue schools. Among other projects, BSF is currently working on creating integrated K–12 computer science/computational thinking curricula—an effort that would make Bellevue among the first in the nation to have a unified computer science teaching plan that builds knowledge in this important field as students progress through their education. BSF is also directly funding special Medina Elementary experiences this year, such as: visits with acclaimed authors (Oliver Chinn for grades K-2; Dan Gemeinhart for grades 3-5); unique theatrical performances about immigration (grade 3), the 19th century gold rush (grade 4), and the American Revolution (grade 5); and for our upper grade art classes, a chance to learn directly from a glass artist and then create their own glass-fused tiles. BSF also funds ongoing teacher training through the National Board certification; many of Medina’s teachers have been through that program.  And BSF works to provide crucial resources for less fortunate students in our Bellevue community, including by providing tuition-free preschool to students who will benefit from a great start to their educational lives.

357 girls from 34 schools participated in Queen's Quest Chess Tournament at Medina Elementary, including 33 of our own Medina Tigers. The tournament is organized and run by Medina parents. It takes a village to run this tournament and many parents worked tirelessly during the tournament.

Our Medina chess scholars had a great day and took FIFTH place in the 1st-3rd grade section and THIRD place in the 4th-6th grade section. GOOD JOB! The following students placed in their grade level or section. Way to go, chess scholars!

We had a special guest Megan Lee at the tournament. Megan Lee is  former National Girls Youth Champion and current member of  Seattle Sluggers, and has played against/with some of the worlds best! Megan gave an inspirational speech to the girls and played chess with them briefly.

Chess4Girls foundation by Shifa Somji also sponsored Amazon gift cards to the top finishers of overall sections.

The Spring session drama classes will take place on Mondays (2:45pm-4:15pm), 4/16/18 to 6/11/18 at Medina Elementary. Class sizes are limited to 12 students per class. Registration will open Tuesday 3/20 and close midnight Wednesday, 4/4. It will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Class fee is $120 total, for all 8 classes.

Here are the new drama class descriptions. We limited the class size to reach the best result!

Once Upon a Time (K-2nd Grade)
Jump into the story! Students will explore classic fairy and folk tales through dramatic play and crafts. Each week we will read a different book, acting it out and discovering new ways to tell the story. We'll change characters if it suits us, and question why the story ends the way it does. Towards the end of the session, we'll choose our favorite story to perform for family and friends on the final day of  class.

Musical Theater Showcase (3-5 Grade)
Musical Theater Showcase A musical theater extravaganza! Students will sing songs, act out scenes and learn choreography from great Broadway musicals. This class will focus on building a character, stage presence, and acting a song. We will end the class with a fabulous musical revue!
