Presidents' Message

Dear Medina Community!

We hope you had a great weekend. This week is our staff appreciation brunch on Wednesday, provided by the 2nd grade. We are excited to show our staff how much we appreciate the hard work they do each day with our children and these brunches are just one of many ways. Thank you to the parents that have brought meals in the past and those who will contribute in the future.
As most of you know, our primary fundraiser, the auction "A Roaring Good Time", is this coming Saturday 3/10/18. Thank you to Britta Bacon and Jaclyn Schwartz for chairing this event. We hope to see you all there as we get together to support our children and the enhancements that our PTA provides to Medina Elementary.  Please note that there has been some confusion as to the time, but doors will open at 5:30 pm. Whether you dress up, dress down or come in costume for the 1920's - we hope to see you for this fun evening.

Raising the funds for our commitments to our students, the school and our community is an important goal. This allows us to provide almost double the instructional aide time, our technology program including the free before and after school classes, professional staff development assistance, the many curriculum enhancements such as field trips, author visits, math and reading computer programs and more as well as the large number of programs that we sponsor or run for both our students and our parents. These commitments and programs, including World Culture Night, STEM week, chess club, math club, ice cream social, our free fall parent brunches, summer playdates, Missoula Children's Theatre, Book Fair, Math Adventure Night, movie nights and more are what set Medina apart and enhance the public education system.

Thank you for your participation and donations. We literally could not do what we do without your volunteerism, participation and generosity.

2018 Medina Elementary PTA Auction 
Saturday, March 10, 2018  
5:30pm at El Gaucho in downtown Bellevue 
 
  ATTENTION ALL MEDINA ELEMENTARY PARENTS  -  CALL FOR ACTION!

We are looking for volunteers to find DONORS to procure auction items as well as SPONSORS for our 2018 auction!  This annual event raises money for the crucial support of our instructional aides, technology personnel and resources, curriculum enhancements, student and parent programs, staff professional development and teacher and student grants.  Did you know it costs over $500 annually in PTA funds for each student at Medina to have the extra education enhancements beyond the basic state funding? And we have over 500 students!  To sustain the level of education we offer each and every student at Medina Elementary, we need your help!  If you or someone you know is interested in being a Sponsor or Donor for the auction, please contact Jaclyn Schwartz (jaclynschwartz1@gmail.com) or Britta Bacon (baconbritta@gmail.com).

Items to consider for procurement (our wish list!): airline miles or tickets, restaurant gift certificates, hotel gift certificates, entertainment gift certificates (movies, bowling, arcade, etc), kid's items including toys, birthday party packages, experiences), sports experiences and memorabilia (Seahawks, Sounders, Mariners, Storm - or any general memorabilia), wine - white, red and champagne (contact us for where to drop it!), trips, group dinners, concert tickets, family photo packages and spa packages - just to name a few!

 Community Outreach Survey

The community outreach team developed a survey to gather some information from families about which areas of the CASEL competencies and Internet Safety they want more information on.  Could you please include the link below in your weekly newsletter.  Let parents know it will only take about five minutes to fill out the survey.

As we enter the second half of the year, we are already looking towards next year's PTA board. We need a nominating committee to find the dedicated individuals who will serve on next year's Executive Committee and Board of Directors. If you are interested in either being on the Nominating Committee or being involved on the Board or in a Committee Chair position, please contact president@medinapta.org.
The programs and events can't be done without you all! We need people driven to making our school a better place for our children to get involved!  


Dear Education Advocate,

There is still a lot of work to do in order to fully and amply fund our public schools, as you well know. Right now legislators are about to vote on a budget that will help get us toward that goal, and they need to hear from you before they vote!

The Supreme Court was clear: legislators must add an extra $1 billion for our schools this year, in 2018. Saying 'no' to the Court is not an option.

The State House and State Senate both propose to deliver that funding, thanks in part to your calls and emails! But their remaining budgets still aren't aligned.

Their plans are like two pieces of bread -- one with peanut butter and one with jelly. Legislators should simply put them together and pass a capital gains tax that raises enough revenue to provide the additional $1 billion in funding for our schools ordered by the Supreme Court. If we don't find new, progressive revenue, then we risk seeing the new funding vanish if there's a recession.

The two budgets are going to be voted on by the House and Senate in the next few days! Washington's Paramount Duty is asking you to please email or call call your legislators, and  spread the word to others.

1.     EMAIL Your State Legislators

Send the below email to your State Senator, your two State Representatives (firstname.lastname@leg.wa.gov), as well as important leaders: the State House Speaker, House Majority Leader, House Budget Chair, Senate Majority Leader, and Senate Budget Chair. Their emails are provided below.

SUBJECT LINE:  $1 Billion Needed in Education Funding; New & Fair Revenue from Capital Gains Now!

BODY OF YOUR EMAIL: The Supreme Court of Washington ruled in November that legislators needed to come up with an extra $1 billion in funding for educator salaries in our public schools. Our students desperately need the teachers, programs, and materials that this funding will make possible.

I am emailing to ask you to support legislation that uses new and progressive revenue, including a capital gains tax, to raise that $1 billion to amply fund all public schools for every child. Thank you for your service to our district and state.

The legislative session is almost over. That means now is the time to call your legislators and ask them to amply fund Washington’s public schools with new progressive revenue from the proposed capital gains tax. You can click this link to call your legislators directly!

Engage in After School Activities

 

 

Titans FC is the #1 youth soccer club on the Greater Eastside, providing top quality coaching to over 1,000 players and prioritizing player development at all levels. The Medina After School Titans program is an excellent way for players at Medina Elementary to learn about the game we love, as well as get a feeling for our program in a fun, safe, and engaging environment. Our coaches will run a game based sessions that will ensure players of all levels will have a great experience.

Our coaches are looking to provide a fun, engaging, beginner soccer class for all students, but are in need of a few more female players so that we can host a female-specific group during training sessions! Please be sure to spread the word about this fantastic soccer program, and don't hesitate to invite any interested students to register.

Calling all Medina female chess players!  Queen's Quest, the largest ALL-GIRL'S elementary chess tournament in the nation, will be held on Saturday, 3/24th, at 8:00 am at Medina Elementary. You can register for the tournament HERE.

The tournament is free to all Medina students. Please remember to choose Medina Elementary for your kid's school, when registering.  It's how registration doesn't ask for a payment.

We hope to see you at Queen's Quest!
