Presidents' Message

Hello Medina Families!

Thank you to those who attended our 2nd General Assembly meeting of the year last week. We successfully updated our standing rules, heard from our teachers and discussed what's coming up.

Our three main events for November are Book Fair, Reflections and Missoula Children's Theatre. 

The Book Fair will take place this Monday - Wednesday from 7:45 am-3 pm each day as well as Family Fun Night on Tuesday night from 5:30-8 pm. This is a terrific chance to encourage your child's love of reading and to see what the award winning books at each level are this year. This is also how we make the funds to stock our amazing library. You can purchase books for your classroom from your teacher's wish list as well. We hope to see you there.

On Tuesday night 11/7/17, we will also have our Reflections exhibit where you can review and vote on the artistic efforts of our children. These then move on to a regional viewing. This year's theme is Within Reach.

The Missoula Children's Theater will be in town the week of November 13th. Thank you to our host families. We are grateful that you are willing to open your home to the directors of the show. This is a great opportunity for grades 1-5 to audition, rehearse and perform in a show. The entire process takes place in the week of 11/13 culminating in two shows on Saturday 11/18. Our kindergartners will have several workshops that they can attend that week. With great costumes and makeup, we expect this year's Gulliver's Travels to be just as much fun as last year's Alice in Wonderland.

Remember there is no school November 9, 10, 23, and 24th.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at Medina this week starting TOMORROW, Monday, November 6 through Wednesday, November 8 in our library.

WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS, ESPECIALLY FOR FAMILY NIGHT ON TUESDAY!!  PLEASE CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP!

Book Fair Hours
Monday: 7:50 am to 3:00 pm
Tuesday: 7:50 am to 3:00 pm and 5:30 to 8:00 pm (Family Night)
Wednesday: 7:50 am to 1:00 pm

To help the event run smoothly, we kindly ask that you note the following:

- Please discuss with your child that there is NO borrowing or sharing of money.
- Once an item is purchased, there are NO refunds. If there is a serious issue that requires a refund, please see Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Roy, Mrs. Browne, or Mrs. Johnston as soon as possible.
- If you are planning to send your child to school with money, please place it in a zip-top bag or envelope labeled with the child’s name and teacher.
- You may send a pre-written check with your student. It should be made out to the Medina PTA with the amount they may spend filled out as well. Change will be given if necessary.
- Please DO NOT send credit cards with your child. We will not accept them without a parent present to sign for the purchase.
- Students should shop for items at the Book Fair during their regular class time. Students will also have access during specified recess times for their grade/class, depending on the day. However, recess time is chaotic, and the best time for students to shop is during their regular class library time or after school.

The Reflections Art Show will also take place during Family Night at the Book Fair. We received some amazing submissions from our students, and they will be on display in the school atrium from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. You can vote for your favorite works of art during the event. The top three winners will receive a prize, and they will be announced at 7:00 pm that evening.

For the first day of the Book Fair, only books will be sold. Trinkets and posters will be available on Family Night and on Wednesday on a first-come, first-served basis.

All teachers will have Wish Lists of titles they would like to add to their classroom libraries.

Parents are welcome to shop at the Book Fair throughout the day. There is a free Scholastic Book Fairs app available. Search “Scholastic Book Fairs” and download the app to discover book reading levels, reviews, summaries, and more!

All proceeds from the Book Fair directly benefit our school library, as we use the funds raised to purchase library materials throughout the year.

Our deepest thanks to the Medina volunteers for organizing and staffing the Book Fair. This well-loved annual event would not happen without your dedication and support.

Audition Signup Will Begin in the Hallway Monday Nov 6th - 8th  !

Save the Date – November 18th, 2017

Well, it’s that time of the year again where we are super excited to welcome Missoula Children’s Theatre to Medina Elementary.  This year’s performance will be the unique interpretation of the treasured children’s classic, Gulliver’s Travels!  For those of you who are new to our school, the Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT), the Nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, has been touring extensively for several years now from Montana to Japan, and will visit nearly 1,200 communities this year with up to 44 teams of Tour Actor/Directors. A tour team arrives at Medina Elementary on November 13th, 2017 with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up, everything it takes to put on a play...except the cast. That’s where our talented, young students come in.  An MCT tour team will hold open auditions for Gulliver’s Travels after school starting Monday, 11/13. The audition/rehearsal time will start at 2:45 pm in the cafeteria. There will be after school rehearsals every day the week of November 13th, followed by two performances on Saturday, 11/18, at 3:00 pm and 5:30 pm. There is no charge to attend the performances.

Creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills and self-esteem are all characteristics that are attained through the participation in this unique, educational project.  MCT's mission is to develop life skills in children through participation in the performing arts.  Be sure to mark your calendar and join in the fun!

*** MCT play is open to a limited number of actors. Should your child not receive a role this time, click HERE to learn how to help kids deal with disappointment   If your child does not deal well with disappointment, this activity may not be for them at this time.

*** We are looking for two families who would like to host the two MCT Tour Actor/Directors. The host families will provide the housing for the MCT Tour Actor/Directors for 7 nights, from Sunday Nov 12th afternoon to Sunday 19th morning. The Tour Actor/Directors and the host families often have wonderful memories and may launch new friendships. This is a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange for the team and the host families. Acceptance is guaranteed if a host family's child wants to be in the show. First come, first serve.

Reflections 

Thanks for all the entries for the this year’s topic “WITHIN REACH”. We received some amazing submissions from our students, and they will be on display in the school atrium Tuesday November 7 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. You can vote for your favorite works of art during the event. The top three winners will receive a prize, and they will be announced at 7:00 pm that evening. So please stop by while you are book shopping at the Family Book Fair Night!!

Ski Bus Winter 2018!

Ski Bus sold out on registration

Please read the info below and go to the links , we do still need signed waiver- can be turned in at front office, the link to register for ski bus will be active starting on October 17.  You can click on forms for lots of information and please get the waiver signed and turned into to office.

General Information:

Ski Bus runs after school on Wednesdays, with the bus departing at 1:00 pm to give students a chance to change and get ready. We return to school at around 5:30 pm. The program dates are 1/10,1/17,1/24,1/31, 2/7 and 2/14.

The lesson program is open to all Medina Elementary students (K-5). However, transportation on the Ski Bus is available only for students in grades 1-5 (sorry, but there is no bus for kindies). This is a PTA-sponsored activity, and for insurance purposes,you must be a current PTA member to sign up your child for this program.  There are different options available, but at the minimum, you will need to purchase the Summit L-T-D Pass. You can learn more and order your season pass on the Summit at Snoqualmie website.

We look forward to another great and hopefully very snowy ski season!

Registration Information:

**Ski Bus online registration will begin Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 at 7:45 am. YOU WILL STILL NEED TO TURN IN SIGNED FORM TO OFFICE.  You can find the forms here. Please read through all paperwork and forms.   If your child will be taking lessons but not riding on the bus, then you can submit your forms to the front office. We will be sending out an email by 11/6 with instructions on how to sign up for ski lessons and purchase your season pass.

Please note that for insurance purposes, you must be a current PTA member to register your child for this activity. We will have two buses going up to Alpental, and we can take up to 92 students on the buses. Parents also have the option of driving their students to the lessons. If you plan to drive rather than have your child ride the bus, then you do not have to sign up for ski bus.  Please send us an email, if you are driving your child- not taking bus- we will send you information on signing up for lessons and purchasing a season pass.- you do need to still sign waiver and  turn into office.

What's New This Week

Dear Medina families,
Every year Jubilee Reach provides Thanksgiving Baskets to hard working families who may need some extra assistance.  If you would like to receive a basket, please complete the Thanksgiving Food Drive form and return it to the Medina Elementary School office in a confidential envelope addressed to me.  (Don’t worry about the date deadline but please try to return as soon as possible.)  Pick-up will be at Jubilee Reach and not at the school.  Please email me at gecke@bsd405.org or call me at 425-456-5410 if you have any questions.

Looking For A Creative Volunteer 

We are hoping to find someone who is creative and good with visual projects.  The school would like to create a wall, for our community to see and reference, of all of our full staff, pictures, names, and jobs.  We have an interested staff member who will be a point person as well and would love to find a parent volunteer who has an interest in this. Please contact president@medinapta.org if you are interested.

Engage in After School Activities

Miss Muller and Mr. Pennewell are excited to meet all the 4th and 5th graders that have signed up!  We are looking forward to a year full of kindness activities and challenges.  Remember to come up the back stairs by the Preschool playground and we meet on Thursday and Friday mornings from 7:40-8:00AM.  You do not have to come to every meeting but we are hoping to have everyone there the first two weeks as we have a big project to launch immediately!  We’ll see you soon!


Math Kangaroo Competition

Where: Medina Elementary School
When:  3/15/18 (Thursday)
Time:  2:45 - 4 pm
Who: 3rd - 5th graders at Medina

Math Kangaroo is an international math competition consisting of a 75 min. multiple choice test completed individually.  It is open to all Medina students from 3rd grade through 5th grade. Registration is open until 15 December 2017. Fee is $20 per student. If you would like to register your student, please follow this LINK

Invitation to Math Challenge Tournament Fall 2017

Math Challenge Tournament is a National Math Tournament for grade 2 to 5 students. This tournament enables students to showcase both their math fundamental and problem-solving skills.  It is open for all students from 2nd grade through 5th grade.

Where: Medina Elementary School
When: November, 28th 2017 (Tuesday)
Time: 2:45 - 4 pm

Medina Wine Club

Are you a wine lover who enjoys discovering rarer wines from the NW? Would you like Medina Elementary PTA to receive a donation when you purchase something you already enjoy?

Medina Wine is offering Medina families either a 4 or 6 bottle monthly wine club. The wine selection is curated from exclusive releases not available in stores. They have committed to making a sizable donation per wine club membership. While you can purchase this as a gift as well, all deliveries must be in the Medina/downtown Bellevue areas.
