DANCE-A-THON 2017

 BUILDING BLOCKS TO A BRIGHTER COMMUNITY

The more you look for the good in things, the easier they are to find...and we are so fortunate to have such a special place to send our kids every day.

Dear families,

I wanted to share a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the event on Friday night.  There were hundreds of people in attendance, and everyone appeared to have a great time!  One of our goals for the Dance-A-Thon was Building Community, and our party far exceeded my expectations…and I can only imagine what this will mean for this year’s highly anticipated school auction in March.

I would also like to extend my appreciation to so many of you involved in putting this together…beginning with the unbelievable support and enthusiasm from our wonderful staff.  Their energy was fantastic, and positively contagious!  It was very easy to recognize how much they care about our kids and our school.  We were also very fortunate to have dozens of volunteers throughout the week, helping with setting up, breaking down, as well as helping with dance instruction.  At one point I counted 11 adults in just one of the 6 daily dance lessons.  I hope each and every one of you (and your children) loved the experience.

First off, a huge thank you to my dear wife, Julie.  Without her patience and support, my role would not have been possible.  Thank you to the following folks behind the scenes, helping with logistics/correspondence/guidance/etc.: Alicia Alibhai, Laura Weingaertner, Jessica Rossman, Cindy Roberts, Deb Kalpakidis, Carrie Ruckhaber, Rebecca Johnston, Denise Stolte-Reinisch, James Rensch, Paul Cun, Michael Zhang, Andrew Kline, Lucille Tam, PTA Presidents Anita and Tracy, Lou Hazim, and Ryan “Big Worm” Lentz.

And a special thank you to co-chair, Viktoria Dillon.  Your help in packaging and delivering the vision was invaluable…and so much fun.

Final thoughts… 

It is my belief that happiness is found easily in community.  It is events like this, Ice Cream Socials, the Auction, and other activities centered around our children, that become the Building Blocks to a Brighter Community…with the help of a few hundred glow-sticks.

I am looking forward to seeing you on March 10th.

Book Fair is coming!  Please mark your calendar for this year’s Scholastic Book Fair, November 6-8.  The fair will be open each day before, during and after school and also on Tuesday, November 7, in the evening for Family Night.  Not only is Book Fair a great opportunity to encourage your student’s love of reading, but it is our sole library specific fundraiser for the year.  Scholastic donates back to our school a portion of the proceeds of all sales, which allows us to supplement the district budget for books and make our library the amazing one that it is.  

Volunteers are essential to helping the Book Fair run smoothly. Our sign-ups are ready to go.  Please click here and choose a spot (or two or three) that work for you  We will need help with set up on Friday, November 3, as well as during the school hours that Book Fair is open, Family Night/Fun Zone on Tuesday, November 9, and tear-down on Monday, November 13.  Shifts range from 1-2 hours. This is a very popular school event and a great volunteer opportunity!


   

Reflections 

Choreograph a dance, produce a film, write a poem or story, compose a song, take a picture or create a piece of visual art and tell us what the theme: 

“Within Reach” means to you. 

The Reflections program is a National PTA and WSPTA cultural arts competition. It is a great opportunity for all students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works, and explaining them in their artist statement. We have an ART SHOW here at school Tuesday November 7 during the family book fair evening. Winners at this school level then have their work forwarded to a competition among students from the Bellevue School District.
Student entry forms can be found here, on our website, or in the school office.

Entry Deadline: Friday November 3, 2017 – please bring artwork and filled out entry form to school office .

Ski Bus Winter 2018!

Ski bus registration began online on Tuesday October 17 at 7:45 am, yep no more waiting in line!!!

Please read the info below and go to the links , we do still need signed waiver- can be turned in at front office, the link to register for ski bus will be active starting on October 17.  You can click on forms for lots of information and please get the waiver signed and turned into to office.

General Information:

Ski Bus runs after school on Wednesdays, with the bus departing at 1:00 pm to give students a chance to change and get ready. We return to school at around 5:30 pm. The program dates are 1/10,1/17,1/24,1/31, 2/7 and 2/14.

The lesson program is open to all Medina Elementary students (K-5). However, transportation on the Ski Bus is available only for students in grades 1-5 (sorry, but there is no bus for kindies). This is a PTA-sponsored activity, and for insurance purposes,you must be a current PTA member to sign up your child for this program.  There are different options available, but at the minimum, you will need to purchase the Summit L-T-D Pass. You can learn more and order your season pass on the Summit at Snoqualmie website.

We look forward to another great and hopefully very snowy ski season!

Registration Information:

**Ski Bus online registration will begin Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 at 7:45 am. YOU WILL STILL NEED TO TURN IN SIGNED FORM TO OFFICE.  You can find the forms here. Please read through all paperwork and forms.   If your child will be taking lessons but not riding on the bus, then you can submit your forms to the front office. We will be sending out an email by 11/6 with instructions on how to sign up for ski lessons and purchase your season pass.

Please note that for insurance purposes, you must be a current PTA member to register your child for this activity. We will have two buses going up to Alpental, and we can take up to 92 students on the buses. Parents also have the option of driving their students to the lessons. If you plan to drive rather than have your child ride the bus, then you do not have to sign up for ski bus.  Please send us an email, if you are driving your child- not taking bus- we will send you information on signing up for lessons and purchasing a season pass.- you do need to still sign waiver and  turn into office.


 Disaster Relief Donations

In light of the numerous natural disasters that have occurred in the last month or so, many in our generous community have asked how Medina can help. While we cannot necessarily collect and send supplies at this time, we can offer a way to donate to the organizations that can help. The American Red Cross has assisted in humanitarian disaster relief across the globe and are working to find ways to assist in Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas as those areas begin to rebuild and recover. We have included their link and organization description below.
The American Red Cross, also known as the American National Red Cross, is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief and education in the United States. What's New This Week

Looking For A Creative Volunteer 

We are hoping to find someone who is creative and good with visual projects.  The school would like to create a wall, for our community to see and reference, of all of our full staff, pictures, names, and jobs.  We have an interested staff member who will be a point person as well and would love to find a parent volunteer who has an interest in this. Please contact president@medinapta.org if you are interested.

Engage in After School Activities

Miss Muller and Mr. Pennewell are excited to meet all the 4th and 5th graders that have signed up!  We are looking forward to a year full of kindness activities and challenges.  Remember to come up the back stairs by the Preschool playground and we meet on Thursday and Friday mornings from 7:40-8:00AM.  You do not have to come to every meeting but we are hoping to have everyone there the first two weeks as we have a big project to launch immediately!  We’ll see you soon!


Invitation to Math Challenge Tournament Fall 2017

Math Challenge Tournament is a National Math Tournament for grade 2 to 5 students. This tournament enables students to showcase both their math fundamental and problem-solving skills.  It is open for all students from 2nd grade through 5th grade.

Where: Medina Elementary School
When: November, 28th 2017 (Tuesday)
Time: 2:45 - 4 pm

At our first meeting, back in September, we described what I-Connect was and what our agenda was for the year.  Principal Laurie Harvey spoke with our group regarding what interesting things are in store for our Medina Elementary community.   PTA Co-President, Anita Bagga, talked about the benefits and function of the PTA and also some representatives were present who spoke about the opportunities to connect with people in our community.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, November 2nd in room 206 at Medina Elementary from 8:30am to 10:30am.   We will have coffee and treats, and we will be discussing the topic, "The Positive and Negative Effects of Technology” We will talk about the pros and cons of technology in our childrens lives, as well as, in our own.  Manda Hakimi Ederer, Ph.D.
Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Medina Elementary’s own ITCL, Alli Smith will be joining our discussion group to share their views on the topic.

Save the Date – November 18th, 2017

Well, it’s that time of the year again where we are super excited to welcome Missoula Children’s Theatre to Medina Elementary.  This year’s performance will be the unique interpretation of the treasured children’s classic, Gulliver’s Travels!  For those of you who are new to our school, the Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT), the Nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, has been touring extensively for several years now from Montana to Japan, and will visit nearly 1,200 communities this year with up to 44 teams of Tour Actor/Directors. A tour team arrives at Medina Elementary on November 13th, 2017 with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up, everything it takes to put on a play...except the cast. That’s where our talented, young students come in.  An MCT tour team will hold open auditions for Gulliver’s Travels after school starting Monday, 11/13. The audition/rehearsal time will start at 2:45 pm in the cafeteria. There will be after school rehearsals every day the week of November 13th, followed by two performances on Saturday, 11/18, at 3:00 pm and 5:30 pm. There is no charge to attend the performances.

Creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills and self-esteem are all characteristics that are attained through the participation in this unique, educational project.  MCT's mission is to develop life skills in children through participation in the performing arts.  Be sure to mark your calendar and join in the fun!

*** MCT play is open to a limited number of actors. Should your child not receive a role this time, click HERE to learn how to help kids deal with disappointment   If your child does not deal well with disappointment, this activity may not be for them at this time.

*** We are looking for two families who would like to host the two MCT Tour Actor/Directors. The host families will provide the housing for the MCT Tour Actor/Directors for 7 nights, from Sunday Nov 12th afternoon to Sunday 19th morning. The Tour Actor/Directors and the host families often have wonderful memories and may launch new friendships. This is a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange for the team and the host families. Acceptance is guaranteed if a host family's child wants to be in the show. First come, first serve.
