Presidents' Message
 
Hello Medina Community!
 
We are loving the transition into cooler weather with some warm sunny days still being enjoyed! We hope many of you have been able to get some sunny outside time! As a friendly reminder please submit your corporate matching forms for the capital campaign -if your company offers a matching program! If you aren’t sure if they do let us know, and we can help answer any questions! 
 
Join us NEXT Friday November 22nd for our General Assembly PTA meeting in the Cafeteria at 8:10 a.m. Immediately following the GA PTA meeting we will have a community emergency preparedness meeting with our school administration, please join us! 
 
We look forward to upcoming fall semester events like our family community service event next Friday the 22nd- learn more below and we hope many of you can join us. Also coming up are Missoula Children's Theater and Bookfair, both in early December! We want to give a shout out to some of the programs that wrapped up this week, like Runner's Club, thank you to those who made that program possible!
 
Looking ahead to the second half of our school year remember to SAVE THE DATE for our annual School Auction on March 7th 2020! The theme this year is Believe Leap Achieve! Learn more HERE, including how to volunteer! Tickets will be available for purchase soon, so stand by! This is an event you do not want to miss.
 
Thank you again for your meaningful support. A huge shout out to our room parents and classroom volunteers who spent countless hours making our classrooms run smoothly!

PTA General Assembly Meeting

Our next PTA General Assembly meeting is next Friday, November 22, 2019 at 8:10am in the school cafeteria right after morning drop-off. The agenda will be posted on the PTA website

Immediately following the GA meeting, we will have a community emergency preparedness meeting with our school administration.

Family Community Service Event

Come join us at the PTA's first family volunteering event of the year! Our event will be held next Friday, November 22, 2019 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm in the school cafeteria.

This community service event will benefit a local Meals on Wheels program. We will create placemats and cards to brighten up the meals delivered to seniors in our community. As an added aspect we will be collecting canned and boxed goods to deliver to our local food bank, Hopelink. Please join us in this opportunity to teach our children the importance of community service as families.

Siblings and family members of all ages are welcome! Feel free to bring supplies like stickers, markers, crayons and patterned paper. (No glitter please.) Pizza and veggies will be provided.

Scholastic Book Fair

It’s time for one of the favorite events of the year! Please mark your calendar for this year’s Scholastic Book Fair, December 3-5. The fair will be open each day during school, briefly before and after school, and also on Wednesday, December 4, in the evening for Family Night. 

Not only is the Scholastic Book Fair a great opportunity to encourage your student’s love of reading, but it is our sole library specific fundraiser for the year. Through book fair sales, we earn money and books for our library, supplementing the district budget and making our library the amazing one that it is. Your student’s teacher may also have wish list items for you to select for purchase to enhance the class library.. 

A successful book fair requires lots of VOLUNTEERS!  Please consider signing up so that we can keep the fair open for all class and recess times.  There are slots available for set up on Monday, December 3, during school hours that Book Fair is open and on Family Night/Fun Zone on Wednesday, December 4, and for the tear down on Friday, December 6. 

This is a very popular school event and a great volunteer opportunity! You may sign up using this link:

New this year is eWallet, an easy way to allow your student to purchase books without sending them to school with cash.  There is no charge to set up an eWallet.  Simply create an account and authorize a spending limit on your credit card.  You must set up an account for each student.  Additional funds can be added at any time and purchases can be tracked.  You are only charged for what is purchased (up to the spending limit).  Visit our webpage https://www.scholastic.com/bf/medina and select the “get started” button to sign up.

What's New This Week

Mental Health Awareness Event: Please Join this Critical Conversation
The Bellevue PTSA Council and National Alliance on Mental Illness Invite you to attend:

Ending the Silence - NAMI Presentation
Date: Monday, November 18
Time: 6:30p - 8:00p
Where: Sammamish High School Commons
 
NAMI "Ending the Silence" is an engaging presentation that helps audience members learn about the warning signs of mental health conditions and what steps to take if you or a loved one are showing symptoms of mental illness. Other topics covered: ending the stigma, acceptance, treatment, and coping skills. A list of local resources for students and families will also be discussed. This is a very valuable evening of critical information sharing and a don't miss event. Thank you for being part of this important conversation.

 

Medina Elementary School’s CO Team = Committee Outreach Team is continuing our year-long Campaign for Compassion, Unity and Kindness! Starting next week and through December, your child can fill out a little form that tells about something they did to show kindness! We have included the form here (as a PDF and JPG), so you can print it at home, help your child fill it out and have your student(s) drop them off in one of two boxes at school. One box will be at the entrance to the school and the other box will be in the Gallery. Principal Harvey and AP Kardos will be drawing names from both boxes to recognize them for their pursuit of kindness! Our Unity Day Assembly was part 1 of our Kindness Campaign. We are excited about this next piece, part 2, in our school-wide Kindness Campaign. Watch for even MORE fun and creative ideas in the coming months!

READ-A-THON

The last day to submit an online book report for our current Book List is approaching fast! The deadline is Wednesday, November 27th, which is less than two weeks away! Remind your child to submit his or her books reports, as this is the only way we will know how many and which books your child has read.

PTA Pulse

Join the Medina PTA. Membership dues are $14 for individuals or $27 for families. With a PTA membership, you'll receive a Medina Elementary School directory and you can sign your children up for PTA supported programs (plus much more!).

Our goal is to have 100% participation through our parent community. We are at 97% participation so far this year! Thank you to those who have joined/renewed. Volunteering is NOT required to join.

Update Your Account

We need up-to-date information for many of our families! Please sign into your account and double check that your family's information is correct, including your child's current grade and teacher. 

Engage in Before/After School Activities

Ski Bus

If you have signed up for ski bus or ski lessons, you should have received an email with information to sign up for lessons and purchase your season ski pass.

You need to have signed the waiver. This will get you on our email distribution list.

IMPORTANT- Once you have successfully registered for ski bus, you will receive information on how to proceed with ski/board lesson sign-ups, and how to purchase your Ski Pass. If you did not receive this information, please reach out to us at skibus@medinapta.org (it means your email is not correct or we do not have it in our roster).  It is your responsibility to stay informed.  The deadline for lesson sign up is Dec 3. If you do not have your child signed up for lessons by the deadline, we will refund you your ski bus registration and move to the next child on waitlist.  Also please note, after December 5th, we will make no changes to the ski bus roster, no refunds or exchanges.  Thank you for your understanding of our need to have deadlines in place. 


Runners Club

THANK YOU to all the runners who joined us for Runners Club this fall! Runners Club has ended for the season. Stay tuned to the Byte for future announcements, including when Runners Club will resume in the Spring.

Missoula Children's Theatre

Thank you to all the families who have signed up for Missoula Children's Theatre. We have a fast growing list of actors! We'll be sending out more details about the event in the coming weeks to those who have signed up. Please stay tuned!

Please note MCT auditions are for grade 1 and above. For those who would like to participate but haven't registered yet, please promptly sign up here to ensure your child has a spot in the audition.

The audition is from 2:35-5pm on Monday 12/9, culminating in performances on 12/14 at 3pm and 5:30pm. Rehearsals are every day during the week of 12/9 from right after school to 7pm. Once your child is cast, please commit to have your child present at rehearsals EVERY DAY. Click here for more information about Missoula Children's Theatre.

We are also calling for host families for the two touring directors from 12/8 afternoon to 12/15 morning. It's a great opportunity for your child to have an artistic and cultural exchange with the directors and launch lasting friendships. Plus your child is guaranteed a role in the play and waived participation fee. Save the Date!  Friday, May 1, is our annual Spring for Schools luncheon at the Bellevue Hyatt Regency. Learn how your dollars transform our Bellevue district schools and support every student, every day. Education Showcase starts at 10:15am and luncheon 11:50am -1:15pm.

 


The Bellevue Association for Educational Office Professionals (BAEOP) is holding a Holiday Craft and Vendor Fair on December 5th from 3-7 PM in the Rainier and Baker Rooms at the WISC (12241 Main Street, Bellevue).  The event is free and open to everyone.  Come take a look at the lovely holiday gifts, grab some refreshments and start your holiday shopping! 

We have room for more vendors and would love to see the handicrafts and other items our BSD families have to offer! Contact Lori Hanson (hansonlo@bsd405.org) if you would like to reserve a table or if you have any questions.  


Bellevue Gifted Alliance Events

Gifted Graduates on College Student Panel
Current college students and graduates of BSD's Gifted High School Program (now Advanced Learning) discuss how to choose a college.  This is a POPULAR event and Free to BSD students and staff with BSD Card. $5 for parents and $10 for non-Bellevue residents.

The panel will be joined by:

*Dr. Richard Repass, Psychiatrist and expert on student mental health and stress management.
